Welcome
Dr. Yuan Ren
Associate Professor
Centre for Advanced Instrumentation
Department of Physics, Durham University
I began my work in terahertz instrumentation during my PhD at Delft University of Technology, developing a high-resolution super-terahertz heterodyne spectrometer with quantum cascade lasers and a superconducting hot electron bolometer mixer, which was later applied in NASA’s GUSTO telescope. Later, as a Research Associate at the Cavendish Laboratory, University of Cambridge, I contributed to the development of terahertz quantum cascade laser-based devices, achieving the first quantum cascade amplifier and a fast terahertz imaging scheme. Subsequently, I became a Professor at the Purple Mountain Observatory Chinese Academy of Sciences, focusing on development of terahertz superconducting receivers and participating in the Chinese Antarctic Expedition to demonstrate terahertz astronomical observations at Dome A. More recently, I joined Centre for Advanced Instrumentation, Department of Physics in Durham University as an Associate Professor, where my research explores terahertz photonics, superconducting detectors, and advanced instrumentations.
Prospective PhD students are welcome to get in touch. Durham University studentship competitions typically open in October and close in January each year. Contact information can be found at the bottom of the page.
